Album Spotlight: Gulfwey "Moons of Neptune"

Gulfwey is the Texas breed producer and rapper mixing the lo-fi sound with a southern twist. Coming to us from the Pnthn label, Moons of Neptune is the 6 track project that is as refreshing as it is memorable. Gulfwey finds the sweet spot in mixing the best of Texas hip-hop along with the classic soul-chopping New York style production. Entirely produced by Gulfway himself, Moons of Neptune is an interesting look into the mind of a multifaceted artist.

One of the more unique aspects of this project is the way Gulfwey uses his vocals. All over this EP, the artist is finding new ways to fluctuate his voice and show off his skills as a singer as well. A song like “Joy” has Gulfwey’s voice practically a part of the beat, being able to camouflage great melodies next to very well arranged drums, a combination that sounds like nothing recorded before it. “Racx” is a stand out on this project, a fuzzy instrumental behind the artist’s mixed down vocals, the recipe for a great low fidelity song. The special thing about this song is that Gulfwey is able to make it sound like it belongs in the playlist of a dark house party, it is high energy without sacrificing the mixing techniques that allows this project to be able to stand on its own.

Under the impressive flows and exciting production, is a true songwriter who isn’t afraid to put themselves out there. Track 4, “One of Mine”, is a well-crafted song that sounds like it is destined to be a hit. A love letter to a loyal significant other wrapped in melodic verses and an unshakable hook. The last song on the project “CUT THROAT” is a poetic letter through the mind of a troubled artist. Gulfwey is letting the listener into his most personal thoughts, leaving no dark thought behind. The feature artist, $achin, was especially open on here and delivered a fantastic verse. “Even the loneliness in me just wants to be whole”, one of the more vulnerable lines in the song, the duo is blurring the line between an artist and their everyday life, allowing his songwriting to act as a therapist for the troubles that affect everyone, including our favorite musicians.

Moons of Neptune is a 6-track showcasing of the many talents Gulfwey has at his disposal. The Texas breed artist shows his homegrown roots while being able to step outside those lines and show an unfiltered creativity that is exciting from beginning to end.
