Apollo’s Harp debut EP, Dawn Is The Enemy, was released on April, 24. The three track project is a quick yet expansive look into the group’s diverse line up and unique sound. G.Rola, Achille, and Ulises Valadez Contreras each manipulate the same sample, all while ending up at completely different outcomes, showing how each individual artist has their own ear and style when it comes to the classic art of sampling.
Dawn Is The Enemy does not give the listener a chance to get distracted. With a runtime of just about seven minutes, these three artists do not leave a moment for silence and welcome you into their world of ambiance and smacking drums. The tracks transition into each other like a waterfall into a lake, leaving us no choice but to become entranced by their distinctive arrangements.
Even with each track portraying different emotions, they complement each other very nicely. This project flows very smoothly and creates an atmosphere that will have you hooked from the first drum hit. Apollo’s Harp paid attention to every detail when creating this project and had the overall experience in mind when putting any finishing touches on the version we are enjoying today.
Each artist’s take on this sample shows just how the art of sampling can take on many forms and be used to create vivid and detailed tracks. Track one was handled by Contreras, who creates a certain ambiance around all of the other elements used to craft this song. The hard-hitting drums and energetic vocal sample all lay nicely over spacy synths. G.Rola takes the sample and chops it up with a beautifully arranged song. Mixing great keys with vintage sounding drums, all leading up to a slowed down bridge that transitions perfectly into the final track from Achille.
Track 3, we see a more slowed down approach, a track that leaves a lot of space for the listener to take a breath and enjoy the story that is being told throughout the song. Achillie creates a floating sensation that is very prevalent throughout this song and wraps up the project in a nice, ambient bow.
Whether it be the mixing tactics or the artist’s arrangements, something about Dawn Is The Enemy feels otherworldly. These three artists come out the gate with a debut EP that is going to seperate them from everyone else. The three tracks on this project show the diversity of a group who pays attention to the ins-and-outs, not just of their song making, but also crafting a cinematic experience when creating a group project, and they’re just getting started.
