The Los Angeles band Standards returns on Top Shelf Records with a new single and upcoming album. “Special Berry” is leading the charge in songs for the Fruit Island album expected to be released this summer. Standards is known for their fun yet technical instrumentation and self-proclaimed “fruit rock” style. The two piece group is composed of guitarist Marcos Mena and drummer Brody Taylor Smith, combining their musicianship to bring a whole new meaning to the words “rock n roll.”
“Special Berry” follows suit in Standards discography, not only in terms of the themed song titles, but the up-beat, fast paced playing that garnered them attention in the first place. Mena can create melodies that fit in perfectly next to Smith’s drumming. They connect almost like a harmonious demolition derby, two different entities going top speed but clashing on purpose to create a whole new sound that is going to draw you in at the first string being plucked and keep you interested until the last cymbal is crashed.
The band achieves this through their chaotic yet beautiful song structure. Mena keeps you guessing throughout his melodies, predicting what he may do next is a futile act, sitting back and listening to him map out these songs is one of the more exciting things about listening to Standards. Smith is never too far behind, being able to come in hard and stick with the aggression behind his playing for a full three minute song is a true mark of musicianship.
