Artist Profile: The Mystique of Mach Hommy

There are more myths then there are facts known about the artist Mach-Hommy. Here is what's known; According to track two off of his album The G.A.T, he’s from northern New Jersey (Newark to be exact), he has only been seen with a Hatian flag around his face, he hangs out with fellow-artist Your Old Droog a lot, and Mach-Hommy is actually short for Mach Homicide. He does very few interviews, maybe a handful, but they are very informative of the artist’s self-pride in his upbringing. Since he was a kid he has been drawing and singing which would lead to Mach’s passion in filming and photography. Although he did these artistic pursuits out of necessity when starting his musical career. Even the “About” page on the artist also known as The Dumpmeister’s website is just a photo of the man himself and a link to his music available on Soundcloud.

The music on Mach-Hommy’s soundcloud is only a fraction of his releases. The rest of Mach’s discography is being sold for hundreds, even thousands of dollars on his personal website. This method of releasing music generates more interest in the music, and in a world where sharing full albums is as easy as making a bowl of cereal, this ensures Mach-Hommy makes his coin off of his own art. Even if 5 or 6 people buy Mach’s releases, there is no middle man taking a portion of the pie. In Fact, right behind Wu-Tang’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin and Nipsey Hussle’s Crenshaw mixtape, Mr. Hommy has the third most expensive album in hip-hop history. Mach-Hommy’s music is also sold in various physical copies, from cassette tapes to CDs to limited edition vinyl LPs with an added obi stripes, and when copies of these physicals are sold out, good luck getting your hands on a copy.

Some of those thousand dollar albums are full collaborative LPs with Mach-Hommy’s friend and fellow artist, Tha God Fahim. This duo has a number of projects together including 2017s successful Dollar Menu Series, a three mixtape run featuring production from SADHUGOLD, Farma Beats, and Camoflauge Monk. Projects like The Notorious Dump Legends, are almost entirely produced by Tha God Fahim himself. Mach’s circle of collaborators is small but very impressive, racking up two albums with veteran producer DJ Muggs, including going under another name with the Cyphers Hill member “Kill Them All” (both collaborative efforts  albums are available to stream everywhere compared to Mach other projects). Mach’s collaboration efforts go beyond trading verses, he has taken the executive producer roles on albums for Tha God Fahim and two out of three albums Your Old Droog dropped in 2019.

Beyond the exclusive LPs and mysterious characteristics is a pure talent for songwriting. Mach credits the content of his music to his upbringing and lessons from his Grandfather provided while Mach was still young. Switching between speaking in english and french, Mach is able to walk the line between witty and intellectual punchlines. In an interview with Casa de Lowrey, Mach states that “The vibe suffers from too much intention”. Whether it be more rhythm-focused songs like “Continental Breakfast” off of Dollar Menu 2 or more emotional tracks like “1080p” off of the critically acclaimed HBO , Mach allows all sides of his personality to show without letting the musical aspects suffer. Singles like “Bon Après-Midi” show Mach-Hommy’s bilingual ability and how he can show multiple influences within just 3 minutes.

At the end of the day Mach-Hommy is the definition of your favorite artist’s favorite artist. An underground poet that has built a cult following by simply providing high quality art. The exclusivity of his music is only a fraction of why his projects are not easy to come by. The content of those albums is what creates the need for his music. Mach-Hommy is one of the pioneers of independent music and one of the best artists the general public may never know.

Be on the lookout for Mach-Hommy’s new album Mach’s Hard Lemonade coming soon.
