Gus Dapperton releases his first official single of 2020. “First Aid” is a beautiful ballad that could bring even the strongest person to a more scencire place. Dapperton is an all around artist who produced and wrote the new single all on his own. The New York artist is coming off of his 2019 debut full-length Where Polly People Go To Read, where he was also credited for doing everything from mixing to producing. If this new single tells us anything about what is in store for this young artist’s year, we’re in for a treat.
The track starts off with a somber acoustic guitar that allows Dapperton to take lead with his unique vocal stylings. Dapperton can take his voice from a soft yet impactful whisper to a full rasp fueled by aggressive creativity. As the instrumental builds up, so does Dapperton’s voice, leading up to hard-hitting drums and electric guitar sections that match the energy Dapperton is bringing on the vocal front. The structure of the song brings it full circle back to the gorgeous acoustic guitar chords that drew you into the song in the first place.
The songwriting on “First Aid” is personal and deep. “Sorry ‘bout my head/ it’s in space/ I’m still learning how to pace.” Dapperton’s clever songwriting has always been a highlight of his music, but on this track he is taking a more personal approach and allowing his emotions to run wild and take on a life of their own. All over this track Dapperton seems to be searching for his “head”, a peace of mind maybe, some sort of sanity that has been escaping everyone recently.
